We carried out the detail design, prefabrication and construction of these shelters in 2002, for the Groundwork Trust Birmingham. A sketch design was in place for this community garden in Handsworth, which we developed to completion.
This size of project allows us to hone our detailed design and specification (and costing !) skills, and also to get out in the fresh air, and have the satisfaction of constructing a project with our own hands.
Prefabrication was carried out in Shropshire, to minimise transport and on-site time. This also leads to an exciting burst of activity on site, when we worked 3 long days and left the site with the main structures complete.
The buildings use home-grown green oak, and galvanised steel components. Seats were made for us by the Green Wood Trust, and school children completed the floor with mosaics.
The buildings are being used by school groups for nature study and gardening sessions.
